## CBM Calculator: what you need to know

CBM (cubic metres) is the volume your cargo occupies; ocean freight, container choice and LCL charges are calculated from it. Multiply carton dimensions in centimetres, divide by 1,000,000 and multiply by the number of cartons.
**Expert tip:** Measure cartons at their outermost points; on bulging or taped cartons a 1–2 cm difference adds up to several cubic metres and real freight cost across hundreds of cartons.

## CBM Calculator: worked example

Example values: Carton length 60 cm, Carton width 40 cm, Carton height 40 cm, Number of cartons 100 pcs. With these values the results are:

| Volume per carton | 0.096 m³ |

| Total volume (CBM) | 9.600 m³ |

| Total volume | 339.0 ft³ |

| Sea volumetric weight (1 m³ = 1,000 kg) | 9,600 kg |

| Air volumetric weight (1:6000) | 1,600 kg |

### How to use: CBM Calculator

- Enter your own values: Carton length, Carton width, Carton height, Number of cartons.

- Results are calculated as you type: Volume per carton, Total volume (CBM), Total volume, Sea volumetric weight (1 m³ = 1,000 kg).

- Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.

## How is it calculated?

- **Volume per carton** = [Carton length] × [Carton width] × [Carton height] ÷ 1,000,000

- **Total volume (CBM)** = [Volume per carton] × [Number of cartons]

- **Total volume** = [Total volume (CBM)] × 35.3147

- **Sea volumetric weight (1 m³ = 1,000 kg)** = [Total volume (CBM)] × 1,000

- **Air volumetric weight (1:6000)** = [Carton length] × [Carton width] × [Carton height] ÷ 6,000 × [Number of cartons]

## Frequently asked questions

How is CBM Calculator calculated?
Calculate total cubic meters (CBM), cubic feet and sea and air volumetric weight from carton dimensions and count. The calculation uses Cargo Fit Engine: Finds the best arrangement and utilization rate from carton, pallet and container dimensions under volume and weight limits.

CBM Calculator: what is it and when is it used?
CBM (cubic metres) is the volume your cargo occupies; ocean freight, container choice and LCL charges are calculated from it. Multiply carton dimensions in centimetres, divide by 1,000,000 and multiply by the number of cartons.

CBM Calculator: what should I watch out for?
Measure cartons at their outermost points; on bulging or taped cartons a 1–2 cm difference adds up to several cubic metres and real freight cost across hundreds of cartons.

How is Total volume (CBM) found?
Total volume (CBM) = [Volume per carton] × [Number of cartons]. With the example values (Carton length 60 cm, Carton width 40 cm, Carton height 40 cm, Number of cartons 100 pcs) the result is 9.600 m³.

Worked example: CBM Calculator
Example values: Carton length 60 cm, Carton width 40 cm, Carton height 40 cm, Number of cartons 100 pcs. Volume per carton: 0.096 m³; Total volume (CBM): 9.600 m³; Total volume: 339.0 ft³; Sea volumetric weight (1 m³ = 1,000 kg): 9,600 kg; Air volumetric weight (1:6000): 1,600 kg.
