## Bunker Calculator: what you need to know

The bunker calculation finds voyage fuel from distance, speed and daily consumption, port fuel from port days, and fuel cost from the price per tonne. Fuel is usually the largest voyage cost item.
**Expert tip:** Consumption varies roughly with the cube of speed: cutting speed by 10% lowers daily consumption by about 27%; keep a 3–10% margin for weather and currents.

## Bunker Calculator: worked example

Example values: Distance 3,200 nm, Speed 12.5 knots, Daily consumption at sea 28 t/gün, Days in port 4 days, Daily consumption in port 3 t/gün, Weather and safety margin 5 %, Fuel price per ton 620 USD. With these values the results are:

| Sea days | 10.67 days |

| Sea fuel | 313.6 t |

| Port fuel | 12.0 t |

| Total fuel | 325.6 t |

| Bunker cost | 201,872 USD |

### How to use: Bunker Calculator

- Enter your own values: Distance, Speed, Daily consumption at sea, Days in port, Daily consumption in port, Weather and safety margin, Fuel price per ton.

- Choose the currency; money inputs are converted at an approximate rate.

- Results are calculated as you type: Sea days, Sea fuel, Port fuel, Total fuel.

- Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.

## How is it calculated?

- **Sea days** = [Distance] ÷ ([Speed] × 24)

- **Sea fuel** = [Sea days] × [Daily consumption at sea] × (1 + [Weather and safety margin] ÷ 100)

- **Port fuel** = [Days in port] × [Daily consumption in port]

- **Total fuel** = [Sea fuel] + [Port fuel]

- **Bunker cost** = [Total fuel] × [Fuel price per ton]

FCRSOFT

## FCRSOFT does this for you automatically

You don’t need to do the calculations and checks on this page by hand every day. FCRSOFT derives them all automatically from the records entered in the field.

- Fuel, port and canal costs are recorded for every voyage.

- TCE and voyage result are compared as estimate versus actual.

- Bunker purchases and consumption are tracked per voyage.

## Frequently asked questions

How is Bunker Calculator calculated?
Calculate sea and port fuel, safety margin and bunker cost from distance, speed and daily consumption. The calculation uses Voyage Economics Engine: Calculates voyage result and TCE from distance, speed, sea and port days, fuel, port, canal and hire costs.

Bunker Calculator: what is it and when is it used?
The bunker calculation finds voyage fuel from distance, speed and daily consumption, port fuel from port days, and fuel cost from the price per tonne. Fuel is usually the largest voyage cost item.

Bunker Calculator: what should I watch out for?
Consumption varies roughly with the cube of speed: cutting speed by 10% lowers daily consumption by about 27%; keep a 3–10% margin for weather and currents.

How is Total fuel found?
Total fuel = [Sea fuel] + [Port fuel]. With the example values (Distance 3,200 nm, Speed 12.5 knots, Daily consumption at sea 28 t/gün, Days in port 4 days, Daily consumption in port 3 t/gün, Weather and safety margin 5 %) the result is 325.6 t.

How is Bunker cost found?
Bunker cost = [Total fuel] × [Fuel price per ton]. With the example values (Distance 3,200 nm, Speed 12.5 knots, Daily consumption at sea 28 t/gün, Days in port 4 days, Daily consumption in port 3 t/gün, Weather and safety margin 5 %) the result is 201,872 USD.

Worked example: Bunker Calculator
Example values: Distance 3,200 nm, Speed 12.5 knots, Daily consumption at sea 28 t/gün, Days in port 4 days, Daily consumption in port 3 t/gün, Weather and safety margin 5 %. Sea days: 10.67 days; Sea fuel: 313.6 t; Port fuel: 12.0 t; Total fuel: 325.6 t; Bunker cost: 201,872 USD.

Is Bunker Calculator free?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser; the data you enter is not stored.

Can FCRSOFT do this calculation automatically?
FCRSOFT records each voyage’s estimate and actual and calculates TCE automatically. You can try the Shipowner & Ship Management package in the live demo without installing anything.

Which currency can I calculate in?
Choose one of 28 currencies in the currency selector; monetary inputs are converted at an approximate rate. To use your own rate, enter the amounts directly.
