## Mean Draft Calculator: worked example

Example values: Forward draft 11.8 m, Aft draft 12.6 m, Midship draft 12.25 m. With these values the results are:

| Forward-aft mean | 12.200 m |

| Quarter mean | 12.238 m |

| Sag (+) / hog (−) | 5.0 cm |

| Trim (by the stern) | 0.80 m |

### How to use: Mean Draft Calculator

- Enter your own values: Forward draft, Aft draft, Midship draft.

- Results are calculated as you type: Forward-aft mean, Quarter mean, Sag (+) / hog (−), Trim (by the stern).

- Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.

## How is it calculated?

- **Forward-aft mean** = ([Forward draft] + [Aft draft]) ÷ 2

- **Quarter mean** = ([Forward draft] + 6 × [Midship draft] + [Aft draft]) ÷ 8

- **Sag (+) / hog (−)** = ([Midship draft] − ([Forward draft] + [Aft draft]) ÷ 2) × 100

- **Trim (by the stern)** = [Aft draft] − [Forward draft]

Ship calculations are estimates based on standard formulas. Loading, stability and draft decisions must be based on the ship’s approved documents and loading computer.

FCRSOFT

## FCRSOFT does this for you automatically

You don’t need to do the calculations and checks on this page by hand every day. FCRSOFT derives them all automatically from the records entered in the field.

- DWT, TPC, draft and capacity data are stored on vessel cards.

- Certificate and document expiry dates are tracked, with warnings before they lapse.

- Voyage estimates use vessel data automatically.

## Frequently asked questions

How is Mean Draft Calculator calculated?
Calculate mean draft, sag/hog effect and quarter mean from forward, aft and midship draft readings. The calculation uses Vessel Hydrostatics Engine: Calculates DWT, displacement, draft, trim, TPC and MCT relationships with standard naval formulas; results must be checked against approved vessel data.

How is Quarter mean found?
Quarter mean = ([Forward draft] + 6 × [Midship draft] + [Aft draft]) ÷ 8. With the example values (Forward draft 11.8 m, Aft draft 12.6 m, Midship draft 12.25 m) the result is 12.238 m.

Worked example: Mean Draft Calculator
Example values: Forward draft 11.8 m, Aft draft 12.6 m, Midship draft 12.25 m. Forward-aft mean: 12.200 m; Quarter mean: 12.238 m; Sag (+) / hog (−): 5.0 cm; Trim (by the stern): 0.80 m.

Is Mean Draft Calculator free?
Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser; the data you enter is not stored.

Can FCRSOFT do this calculation automatically?
FCRSOFT stores DWT, TPC and draft data on vessel cards and uses it automatically in voyage estimates. You can try the Fleet & Vessel package in the live demo without installing anything.

Do the results replace official ship calculations?
No. Ship calculations are estimates based on standard formulas. Loading, stability and draft decisions must be based on the ship’s approved documents and loading computer.
