Chargeable Weight: what you need to know

Chargeable weight is the weight the carrier invoices: the greater of actual gross weight and volumetric weight. Air cargo uses 1 m³ = 167 kg, road usually 1 m³ = 333 kg and sea LCL 1 m³ = 1,000 kg.

Expert tip: For light, bulky shipments, reducing packaging size is the fastest way to cut freight without changing the product.

Chargeable Weight: worked example

Example values: Transport mode (volume factor) Air cargo (1:6000), Actual gross weight 320 kg, Total volume 2.4 m³, Rate per kg 3.2 USD. With these values the results are:

Volumetric weight400.0 kg
Chargeable weight400.0 kg
Charging basisVolume
Freight1,280 USD

How to use: Chargeable Weight

  1. Enter your own values: Transport mode (volume factor), Actual gross weight, Total volume, Rate per kg.
  2. Choose the currency; money inputs are converted at an approximate rate.
  3. Results are calculated as you type: Volumetric weight, Chargeable weight, Charging basis, Freight.
  4. Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.

How is it calculated?

  • Volumetric weight = [Total volume] × [Volumetric factor (kg/m³)]
  • Chargeable weight = max([Actual gross weight]; [Volumetric weight])
  • Freight = [Chargeable weight] × [Rate per kg]

How is Freight found?

Freight = [Chargeable weight] × [Rate per kg]. With the example values (Transport mode (volume factor) Air cargo (1:6000), Actual gross weight 320 kg, Total volume 2.4 m³, Rate per kg 3.2 USD) the result is 1,280 USD.
