Mean draft
11.51 m
Sinkage from added cargo
34.5 cm
Draft after loading
11.85 m

Draft Calculator: worked example

Example values: Displacement 60,000 t, Length between perpendiculars (LBP) 190 m, Breadth (B) 32.26 m, Block coefficient (Cb) 0.83, Water density Seawater 1.025, Cargo to be added 2,000 t, TPC 58 t/cm. With these values the results are:

Mean draft11.51 m
Sinkage from added cargo34.5 cm
Draft after loading11.85 m

How to use: Draft Calculator

  1. Enter your own values: Displacement, Length between perpendiculars (LBP), Breadth (B), Block coefficient (Cb), Water density, Cargo to be added, TPC.
  2. Results are calculated as you type: Mean draft, Sinkage from added cargo, Draft after loading.
  3. Check every step of the calculation in the formulas below.

How is it calculated?

  • Mean draft = [Displacement] ÷ ([Length between perpendiculars (LBP)] × [Breadth (B)] × [Block coefficient (Cb)] × [Water density])
  • Sinkage from added cargo = [Cargo to be added] ÷ [TPC]
  • Draft after loading = [Mean draft] + [Sinkage from added cargo] ÷ 100

Ship calculations are estimates based on standard formulas. Loading, stability and draft decisions must be based on the ship’s approved documents and loading computer.

FCRSOFT

FCRSOFT does this for you automatically

You don’t need to do the calculations and checks on this page by hand every day. FCRSOFT derives them all automatically from the records entered in the field.

  • DWT, TPC, draft and capacity data are stored on vessel cards.
  • Certificate and document expiry dates are tracked, with warnings before they lapse.
  • Voyage estimates use vessel data automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How is Draft Calculator calculated?

Calculate mean draft from displacement, length, breadth and block coefficient, and the draft increase after loading using TPC. The calculation uses Vessel Hydrostatics Engine: Calculates DWT, displacement, draft, trim, TPC and MCT relationships with standard naval formulas; results must be checked against approved vessel data.

How is Mean draft found?

Mean draft = [Displacement] ÷ ([Length between perpendiculars (LBP)] × [Breadth (B)] × [Block coefficient (Cb)] × [Water density]). With the example values (Displacement 60,000 t, Length between perpendiculars (LBP) 190 m, Breadth (B) 32.26 m, Block coefficient (Cb) 0.83, Water density Seawater 1.025, Cargo to be added 2,000 t) the result is 11.51 m.

How is Draft after loading found?

Draft after loading = [Mean draft] + [Sinkage from added cargo] ÷ 100. With the example values (Displacement 60,000 t, Length between perpendiculars (LBP) 190 m, Breadth (B) 32.26 m, Block coefficient (Cb) 0.83, Water density Seawater 1.025, Cargo to be added 2,000 t) the result is 11.85 m.

Worked example: Draft Calculator

Example values: Displacement 60,000 t, Length between perpendiculars (LBP) 190 m, Breadth (B) 32.26 m, Block coefficient (Cb) 0.83, Water density Seawater 1.025, Cargo to be added 2,000 t. Mean draft: 11.51 m; Sinkage from added cargo: 34.5 cm; Draft after loading: 11.85 m.

Is Draft Calculator free?

Yes. The tool is free, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser; the data you enter is not stored.

Can FCRSOFT do this calculation automatically?

FCRSOFT stores DWT, TPC and draft data on vessel cards and uses it automatically in voyage estimates. You can try the Fleet & Vessel package in the live demo without installing anything.

Do the results replace official ship calculations?

No. Ship calculations are estimates based on standard formulas. Loading, stability and draft decisions must be based on the ship’s approved documents and loading computer.
