How to Calculate Feed Cost in Fish Production

Feed is the biggest cost item in fish farming. To calculate it correctly, you need to look at feed price together with FCR.

Feed cost per kg of fish

Feed cost per kg of fish = FCR × Feed price

With an FCR of 1.6 and a feed price of 1.30 USD/kg, feed alone costs 2.08 USD per kg of fish.

Annual feed budget

Annual feed cost = Annual production (kg) × FCR × Feed price

For example, with annual production of 1,000 tonnes, an FCR of 1.6 and feed at 1.30 USD/kg, the annual feed cost is about 2,080,000 USD.

Feed’s share of total cost

Feed makes up 50–70% of total production cost on most farms. Tracking this share lets you see in advance how price rises will affect profitability.

Ways to reduce feed cost

  • Improve FCR: less feed per kg of fish.
  • Compare feeds by cost per kg of growth, not by price.
  • Reduce feed loss by observing the end of meals and with cameras.
  • Plan stocks properly to avoid urgent, expensive purchases.

FCRSOFT

FCRSOFT does this for you automatically

You don’t need to do the calculations and checks on this page by hand every day. FCRSOFT derives them all automatically from the records entered in the field.

  • The real feed cost of every batch is calculated per kg of fish.
  • When the feed price changes, cost reports update automatically.
  • Feed, labour and energy costs are allocated to each batch and kilogram.
